Week 3

Activity 14: Rice Play

Another sensory kit from Happimess and again I highly recommend this sort of activity. The girls came back to it over a period of three or four days to make different things with the coloured rice. Miss 2 was really into using the tweezers to transfer/pick up coloured chick peas and put them into a patty pan. Miss 6 created a blue pond amongst the pink rice for the little fish that were amongst the blue rice in the ocean kit.

Activity 15: Shaving cream with food dye

This is a messy activity that should be done outside but it was too windy. I’d say this was successful and entertained everyone for more than 30 min.

Activity 16: Colour diffusing paper butterflies

I got the butterflies online. We experimented with spraying them with a spray bottle, flicking paint, using watercolours, pens and crayones. These were then used for our paper mache craft.

Activity 17: Papier-mâché Lanterns

This was a two-day activity. Day 1: 3 layers of paper mache. Day 2: Paint and then glue on butterflies. Add LED candles.

I completed most of Miss 2’s lanter. Miss 6 did most of the painting but I helped a lot with hers too. She was particularly happy with the result and really excited to add the LED candles.

Activity 18: Making cards (2yo), food dye on paper towel (6yo)

Miss 2 wrote some “letters” to daddy and enjoyed putting them into envelopes and drawing on them. Miss 6 experimented with food dye on paper towel and the result was pretty cool.

Activity 19: Shape cutters and drawing (2yo) and drawing (6yo)

Activity 20: Mosaics

These kits can be bought from Mandala Art online. It’s definitely an activity for older kids although younger children can have a go if you sit with them and supervise due to the small parts and glue. Miss 6 had to have breaks as she got bored but overall it was very successful and she reflected later on the fact that it was “very fun”. After we finished she also enjoyed sorting all of the left over tiles into groups and playing with them.
